Moral Compass
Jagadguru is a term used for a Guru, whose influence on the world has the power to transform it. The term – literally meaning “guru of the world” – comes from the Sanskrit word, Jagat, meaning “world,” “Earth,” “the cosmos” or “mankind”; and Guru, which means “teacher” and usually refers to a spiritual master. The title of Jagadguru is typically used in traditional Hinduism, particularly for acharyas (spiritual teachers) in the Vedanta school of thought who have written annotations on the scriptures. In the scriptures, the word has been used for several Devas.
One of the most notable Jagadguru was Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj, who was bestowed with this title by Lord Vitthal. Jagadguru Sant Tukaram was a Warakari saint from the seventeenth century AD. Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj is best known for his devotional poetry called Abhanga and Ghata are community-oriented worship with spiritual songs known as kirtans. His poetry was devoted to Lord Vitthal. His parents and his forefathers were devotees of Lord Vitthal, an avatar of Hindu deity Vishnu (Vaishnavas). Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj’s Mother and wife’s -birth place is Lohegaon, Pune. In Lohegaon, many incidents cases occurred in Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj’s life and in memories to that we have Shila Mandir, Harant Tale (where Sant Tukaram Maharaj often took bath). But these incidents are just memories of our forefather’s generation, as we are not aware of any such incidents. Jagadguru Sant Tukaram had 14 devotees who followed him in his kirtans from which 5 resided in Lohegaon. According to some scholars, Sant Tukaram met Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj – a leader who challenged the Mughal Empire and founded the Maratha kingdom. Their continued interaction is the subject of legends. Eleanor Zelliot (was an American writer, professor of Carleton College and specialist on the history of India) states that Bhakti movement poets including Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj were influential in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s rise to power.
